There are three main types of volcanoes that geologists generally group.

1. Cinder Cones

These are the simplest type of volcano. They are steep cone shaped, hence the name. It is formed above a vent. A cinder cone volcano forms when ash and cinder (melted volcanic rock that has cooled) builds up around the vent and form a cone like shape.

2. Composite Volcanoes

Composite volcanoes can get as tall as 8000 feet. They are made of many layers of hardened lava. Lava that flows from the actual composite volcano, it doesn't travel far becuase of high viscosity (resistance to fluid). It is called a composite volcano because of their layers of composite build up from its eruptive materials. They are also known as Strato volcanoes.

3. Shield volcanoes

This type of volcano is built out of lava flows. The volcano looks a bit like a "warriors shield," which is where it gets its name from. They are very large but short in height. This is because the lava from the volcano flows farther than other volcanoes because it had a low viscosity (resistance to fluid.)
